Find the right method for you
Choosing the right extension method can make a huge difference to the overall result, comfort, and maintenance of your hair.
Working in an extension-focused salon every day, we know there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Things like your natural hair density, lifestyle, desired result, and maintenance all play a part in what method and quantity will work best for you.
Below is a general guide based on what we commonly use in salon and the results we typically achieve with each method.

Keratin Bonds
A long-term method lasting approximately 3–5 months with proper maintenance. Great for more customise placement.

Frequently Asked Questions
The best extension method for you will depend on your natural hair density, lifestyle, maintenance preferences, and desired result. Some clients are best suited to one method, while others achieve the most seamless result using a combination of methods. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to guide you based on your hair goals.
The amount of hair required will vary based on your natural density, haircut, and the result you’re looking to achieve. It’s not just about adding length or volume, it’s about selecting the right grams to create a balanced, seamless blend that looks and feels natural.
Different extension methods also play a role in how much hair is needed. For example, wefts are typically used to build volume and structure through the back, while finer methods such as keratin bonds or Invisi tapes are often used to customise the front, refine the hairline, and enhance overall blending. In many cases, a combination of methods allows for the most tailored and undetectable result.
As a general guide:
50g–75g
Best suited for adding subtle volume and fullness. Ideal for refining the ends or enhancing natural hair without significantly increasing length.
100g
Suitable for finer hair types wanting moderate length and volume. This is often considered a natural, full head result for lower density hair.
150g+
The most commonly used amount in salon for fuller transformations. Provides noticeable length and volume while maintaining a seamless, well-balanced finish.
200g+
Recommended for shorter, thicker, or blunt haircuts where more grams are needed to build out the shape. Ideal for maximum fullness, significant added length, and a consistent blend from root to ends.
Absolutely. In salon, combining methods is often the key to achieving the most seamless, customised result.
While a single method can work well for some clients, many benefit from a tailored approach that uses different techniques in different areas of the head. This allows us to build volume where it’s needed, while keeping the finish soft, natural, and undetectable.
The most common combination we use is wefts through the back for fullness, density, and structure, paired with Invisi tapes or keratin bonds through the front. These finer, individual methods are perfect for the hairline and face-framing areas, where more detail and flexibility are needed to create a softer, more natural connection.
This approach allows us to:
- Create volume and strength through the back.
- Keep the front light, seamless, and customisable.
- Blend shorter layers or finer hairlines more effectively.
- Avoid bulk or visible attachment points in high-risk areas.
Using individual methods through the front also gives us more control with placement and colour blending, allowing us to refine the result and create that true “invisible” finish.
The main difference comes down to how the hair is constructed and how the tape sits in the hair.
Traditional tape extensions have the hair attached below the tape tab. This can create a slightly thicker, more visible connection point, especially in finer areas or around the hairline.
HHA Invisi Tapes are designed differently. The hair runs all the way up into the tape tab, allowing the extension to sit flatter against the scalp. This creates a softer, more seamless finish that blends more naturally into the hair.
Our Invisi Tapes are also smaller at 3.5cm wide, compared to standard tapes. This allows for:
- More precise placement
- Better control through the hairline and face framing areas
- Less bulk in finer or more visible sections
The result is a lighter, more flexible extension that moves naturally and is far less detectable.
Invisi Tapes are ideal for:
- Finer hair types
- Clients wanting a super natural, invisible finish
- Customising around the front and hairline
- Blending shorter or broken areas.
Yes, when selected and applied correctly, wefts can work beautifully on finer hair types.
The key is in the consultation, placement, and the amount of hair used. Fine hair requires a more considered approach to ensure the weft sits flat, remains comfortable, and stays completely undetectable. This means choosing the right grams, keeping placement within safe zones, and avoiding unnecessary bulk.
Our Invisi Wefts are specifically designed to sit flatter and lighter, making them more suitable for finer densities compared to traditional wefts. When installed correctly, they can add soft, natural volume through the back without compromising the blend.
In many cases, we will also combine methods to achieve the best result. For example, using wefts for volume and structure through the back, and finer methods like Invisi tapes or keratin bonds through the front to refine the hairline and blend shorter layers. This creates a more seamless, customised finish.
Wefts may not be suitable for every fine hair client, particularly if the hair is very fragile, sparse, or unable to support tension. This is why a professional consultation is essential.
